Tisha B'Av is such a legit choice. totally understand why someone would connect with that day. because of the historical meaning it's had for the Jewish people.

did you know that Rabbi Isaac Abarbanel, who Queen Isabella had serving in her Spanish court, convinced King Ferdinand to make the 1492 Alhambra Decree, expelling the Jews from Spain, on Tisha B'Av? if Jews are going to suffer, especially if Jews are going to suffer expulsion, we might as well be able to mourn that expulsion on the same day that the Second Temple was destroyed in 70 CE.

For purposes of clarity, I'm not including anything that could in good faith be considered politics (i.e. a reasonable difference of opinion) but am including things that call for violence against Jews regardless of whether they have been dressed up as politics or not.

hello! I hope this question isn’t overstepping, but feel free to delete this if so! I just wanted to know if there’s anything I can really do to help Jewish people at this time? The way I phrased that sounds really weird and bad lol sorry, but idk how else to say it. I’m gonna be honest with you, I actually know almost next to nothing about Jewish people (culture, religion and stuff) outside of what I was taught when I was an evangelical Christian (grew up religious, I’m not anymore) and you… probably don’t wanna hear what evangelical Christians teach people about Jewish people and culture, so I’ll just say that it’s very… unsavoury and weird and sort of fetish-ey. But you probably knew that already. Anyway, what I mean is that since October 7th, there’s been a huge rise of antisemitism globally, mostly by the youth, people around my age (I’m 18) being indoctrinated by media and directing their hatred and anger towards those who do not deserve it and refusing to fight or vote for the rights that we Americans might lose if trump is elected again. I wanna help stop or curb the antisemitism spread, but I’m kind of unsure how I can help. Obviously I’m aware that as a goyim, I definitely cannot, should not (and will not) speak for Jewish people as I don’t know the Jewish experience. I’m also aware that while the Israeli government is kind of wilding out right now, the government is not the representative of all the citizens of Israel and that when criticising Israel (the state) we must not generalise a whole population of people. Thank you!

this is a great question to ask! I don’t feel like it’s overstepping at all.

I’m not sure what more can be done to stop the spread of antisemitism beyond calling it out when you see it either from friends, family, or figures and orgs, and not participating in it yourself. you can, however, help jewish people while this is happening. you can reach out to local synagogues and see if they need any volunteers to help walk jews to and from their cars for security (if you’re able/willing), contact local jewish organizations and see if they need any volunteers or donations, and just see what kind of community action you can do in your area. if you can do so monetarily, you can support gofundme’s and orgs combating antisemitism on a larger scale like Stop Jewish Hate, or you can support them just by sharing their posts on your socials. museums are being targeted right now for having any jewish related exhibits, such as the Holocaust Museum and members of the Brooklyn Museum were just attacked, both establishments could use donations and advocacy.

And so as not to derail that previous post further, I'm taking my rant to this new post, but shit like that makes me so angry for so many reasons:

It's a hate crime against Jews, many of whom are totally uninvolved in the current situation

Let's say that hypothetically that this organization and every single one of its members was publicly advocating for the destruction of Gaza** or something: vandalizing a synagogue is still a hate crime, because you're not just targeting that community by spewing antisemitism, you are targeting all Jews. Every Jew. Every Jewish institution. Because the thing is that there is never an excuse for antisemitism. If you say that there is, what you're saying is that antisemitism IS okay as long as it's directed at Bad Jews or Jews you don't like. I can't stand Caitlin Jenner, but I'm not gonna call her out of her name or misgender her. Kanye is a walking dumpster fire of a human, but that doesn't mean I get to say racist stuff about him. And yeah - even Jews with the worst, ugliest opinions do not legitimize antisemitism. Come on guys, this is Social Justice 101.

And another thing: Let's assume again the worst about this group - they still don't have any power to actually change or stop what's happening in Israel. They are diaspora Jews who, unless they are randomly dual citizens, cannot vote and do not live there. Even if this antisemitic hate crime somehow inspired a deep reflection about who and how they are as Jews (massively unlikely for reasons that should be obvious), them taking up the torch of anti-Zionism does not have any legal significance. This act, in addition to being a hate crime, is one that is not even strategic in helping to shut down bad actors with actual power, nor is it at all calculated to build community bridges.

In fact, it is almost guaranteed to have the opposite effect: these vandals have not only made enemies of this community, but alienated any other potential Jewish allies.

But even if we set that aside, assuming that they don't care, it's massively counterproductive in that it will likely inspire more diaspora Jews to feel unsafe in that location and consider aliyah as an answer. If anything, these kinds of acts of blind hatred only reinforce the legitimate fear behind much of Zionism. You people just can't help proving again and again that Jews are physically, emotionally, spiritually, and socially unsafe in the diaspora and need somewhere that is guaranteed to take us in when the next Kristallnacht happens.

It's also counterproductive, even if you actually just want Jews to die and don't care where we go; you actively want the destruction of Israel and all of the Jewish people because you're an antisemitic jackass you think it's somehow deserved: Normal people actually don't want that, and so if you're trying to attract other goyim who are decent people to your cause, associating pro-Palestinian activism with hate crimes is one of the worst things you can do in terms of PR and moral high ground.

Using Palestinian lives, deaths, and suffering as a bludgeon ignores them as real people and dehumanizes them and their struggle in the process. Anyone engaging in or excusing this kind of behavior is misusing their cry for justice as a get-out-of-antisemitism-free card, dehumanizing them by turning them into a weapon, and diverting much-needed energy away from things that actually help to doing PR cleanup and having to publicly distance themselves from these disgusting acts.

(**Please note that I am not saying these people were; in fact, I have yet to see a not-reactionary right-wing fringe Jewish group calling for anything but a return of the hostages and praying for peace in the region)

As a professional statistician (they really pay me!) and data viz expert, let me disclaim: a pie chart -- even a deluxe exploded one like this -- is almost never the right choice of figure for your data. Make sure to only use it for unordered qualitative data describing proportions of a whole - a bar chart is usually the better option for everything else, such as opinions polled by Likert (strongly agree, agree, etc), binary responses, anything where you can vote for more than one option, or raw numbers. Around 96% of Jewish voters responded yes and around 4% of Jewish voters responded 'no'

Results are Skewed

Beyond all the usual factors that make tumblr polls not representative of anything and mostly just for fun, these results- specifically the amount of non-Jewish voters voting yes- do not reflect how many poll respondents actually know the Chanukah story. Rather, it reflects how many of them think they know the story. (Of course, this can apply to Jewish voters as well, but it's less likely to be as widespread of an issue and less suspect from the tags.)

In the tags on this post, many goyim who voted 'yes' spoke about the miracle of the oil, but made no mention of the historical context- no Seleucids, no Antiochus, no Hasmoneans, no Maccabees, no disputes between kohanim, etc. It's unclear whether they know about this history or thought the miracle of the oil is the subject of the poll.

Others in the tags said what they thought the history was and it was just straight up wrong and missing information- something like "the Jews hid from persecution and didn't have enough oil but then they found oil"- and it's unclear whether they voted yes or no.

Another thing frequently mentioned in the tags is that they learned the Chanukah story in elementary school and therefore voted yes. Now, admittedly I have no idea what a public school ~diverse holiday education~ curriculum looks like, but there was no further elaboration that clearly shows knowledge of the history, so I can't be sure what they were taught. If anyone who learned it in a non-Jewish/public elementary school wants to elaborate on what exactly you learned please do!

Many people also responded that they learned the history from Rugrats. Rugrats is great! The brief history there is accurate enough and reflects what you'd imbibe from growing up Jewish with your average Jewish children's education.

More Georgia State University “Alt-Right” Racists APRIL 12, 2017

On September 10, 2016, white nationalists of the Georgia “Alt-Right” had a gathering at Stone Mountain Park outside Atlanta. Over a dozen white nationalists were recorded by a visitor to the Park, as they chanted “Alt-Right, Alt-Right!” and addressed her with sexist and antisemitic jeers (e.g. “Christ killer,” “Jews don’t wear panties.”) Two leaders of the “Alt-Right” group, Patrick Sharp and Casey Cooper, wore shirts for The Right Stuff, a far-Right racist website.

In the Metro Atlanta area, white nationalists associated with the “Alt-Right” have had a wave of activity in recent months, seemingly energized first by the Trump campaign and then by Trump’s presidential victory. Racist stickers and posters have appeared on Atlanta-area campuses; there have been several local networking events; and on January 28, 2017, “Alt-Right” white nationalists and Southern secessionists gathered for the larger “Atlanta Forum” regional gathering in Marietta.

Core activists of the energized local “Alt-Right” were caught in action at Stone Mountain on September 10 last year. While typically local “Alt-Right” racists meet in secrecy, this time they got recorded. Three of the white nationalists who appeared on Stone Mountain in September are discussed below. All three are Georgia State University students. (Patrick Sharp, one of the leaders of the “Alt-Right” group on the Mountain, was also until recently a GSU student — we have discussed Sharp extensively elsewhere.)

Charles (Chaz) Neugebauer

Charles Neugebauer is a Criminal Justice major at GSU and is the President of the University’s Boxing Club. On Twitter, Chaz Neugebauer uses the handle “Chud”/@chaz_nuke. This account follows local “Alt-Right” profiles plus better-known national ones such as TheRightStuff and Richard Spencer. On this Twitter account, Neugebauer portrays immigration in Europe as an “invading army” and further signals his far-Right worldview in comments such as: “Your ancestors didn’t fight and die for you to chose [sic] their adversaries over your own people.”

One string of Twitter comments complains about being “called a racist” in one of his current classes. We can only guess what led to that.

Chase Carroll

Chase Riggs Carroll is another GSU Criminal Justice student, friend of Chaz Neugebauer, and a participant in the GSU Boxing Club. At the September 2016 “Alt-Right” gathering in Stone Mountain Park, Carroll carried a Confederate Battle Flag. At the time, Carroll’s hair was long, but he has since shifted to a stricter, shorter style.

Chaz Neugebauer and Chase Carroll have been seen conferring with Spencer Madison, another far-Right militant attending GSU. [1]

McKinley Witzler

Finally, McKinley Witzler is listed as a Political Science student on GSU’s MeritPages site. Witzler has a Security job with Georgia State, and has been spotted working nights around campus.

Witzler’s radicalization towards the Right seems to have occurred last year. On June 15, 2016, Witzler attended a Trump campaign stop at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Also in June, Witzler started his (now gone) “12thCenturyShitlord”/@USBarbarossa Twitter account, which he used to argue that BlackLivesMatter protests should be “crushed,” that voting rights for women should be repealed, and that “jews run the media, finances, schools, governments, and blame everything on Whites.”

We believe that McKinley Witzler followed his “12thCenturyShitlord” Twitter account with one named “9thCenturyDeplorable”/@USCharlemagne which has recently been reactivated.

On November 13, 2016 — the day after white nationalist posters and stickers were placed on Atlanta-area campuses as part of a coordinated propaganda campaign — USCharlemagne Tweeted “There’s some naughty goyim in Atlanta.” This suggests the user’s approval of and possibly involvement with the white power action, which was coordinated nationally by TheRightStuff and which hit GSU as well as other campuses in Georgia.

The “9thCenturyDeplorable”/USCharlemagne account was relaunched on March 22 of this year. The first post of the reborn account was a Holocaust reference: “Rev up those ovens, I’m back!” The profile currently lists its “dislikes” as “Saracens” — a term for Muslims from the time of the Crusades — as well as “Jews.”

While McKinley Witzler was photographed on Stone Mountain with long hair, Witzler has now adopted the undercut short hairstyle favored by the Alt-Right — perhaps an attempt to fit in with his militant racist pals.

Conclusion

“Alt-Right” racists are slowly moving from internet posting to concrete activity on campuses and in communities. We highlighted three participants in the local “Alt-Right” scene who were filmed at a 2016 white power gathering. At Georgia State, one of them could be your classmate, the security person in your building, or the person instructing how to throw an efficient punch. We believe that white power activists such as Neugebauer, Carroll and Witzler should be taken seriously. Any attempts they may make to organize against people of color, Muslims, Jewish people, sexual minorities, or other targets must be opposed. It is essential that anti-racists build active networks and broader coalitions that are up for the task.

Can you give non-jews some tips on how to fight antisemitism? I wanna be good ally but I am so clueless ☹️

1. listen to us. pay attention to our criticisms of antisemitism. some good blogs to follow would be @fromchaostocosmos, @littlegoythings, @tikkunolamorgtfo, and @returnofthejudai!

2. call it out when you see/hear it happening. if someone makes a nazi/holocaust/antisemitic joke? let them know that it wasn’t funny. if someone perpetuates a harmful stereotype, like that we’re all capitalists/communists/greedy/lust for the blood of children/etc? shut them down.

3. notice when someone in an sjw circle is being antisemitic. don’t tolerate someone using “jew” and “israeli” interchangeably, or insist that jewish people are somehow more racist than the average white person. feel free to remind people that jewish people overwhelmingly voted for clinton in this past election (source here). one of the best ways to fight antisemitism is within our own communities.

ok so i really like this ask and im sorry that it took me a bit to answer it but i wanted to do it somewhat right even though im like......an 18 y/o dumbass with a blog please keep that in mind

different groups have different needs, of course, and geographically what one can actively DO can vary a ton, but in online activism and generally in leftist/sj spaces there’s a lot that could use improvement. getting rid of microaggressions is a big one, and its something probably everyone is guilty of. analyzing your own conceptions about marginalized groups that you dont belong to and your language when talking about these groups and how you treat members of a group. battening down on cissexist and transphobic language and ideas is a good start, wrt the trans community at least. this isnt new at all but basically dont unnecessarily gender language to exclude trans folk, dont gender body parts, be cool about peoples pronouns, do your own research, TALK TO PEOPLE (!! this is an important one! members of a marginalized group tend 2 be the best experts after all), be careful of & learn to recognize insidious radfem rhetoric like ppl talking about “male socialization” re: trans women (an incorrect and fucked up concept) or “biological sex” or those kinds of things, and, if youre financially able, support people with their transition! that shit is expensive! there are tons of donation posts there for people who need hrt or surgery, and even just reblogging helps a little bit. boost voices coming from the community, be critical of the media you consume and if youre cis use your privilege to protect and help trans people in the ways youre able to. GET INVOLVED IN YOUR LOCAL ELECTIONS! do a bit of research about the politics and elections in your area, and use your vote to shut down horrible politicians who want to use their power to punch down on marginalized groups by passing laws and bills that discriminate against them, overtly or not. theres probably a lot more than this and its pretty basic, but its something at least!

also i think some of the above could be said for groups affected and targeted by nazis and white supremacy too, although antisemitism in particular can be incredibly covert and IS really widespread in leftist spaces, which someone else could probably talk more about than me since im dumb as fuck. but yknow, shut down alt-right assholes who spout that garbage (using reductive terms like “the jews”, “blacks”, “transgenders”, etc. is a BIG red flag), make an effort to educate yourself on the history behind nazism (and understand that antisemitism didnt begin or end with nazis), shut down holocaust denial AND attempted “justification” of the holocaust (but also: if youre not jewish or rromani then dont overstep your bounds wrt this topic in particular because whatever you have to say about it is probably gonna be extremely lacking), be careful of stereotypes and hate speech (”jews are greedy, barbaric, [any comparison to an animal], colonizers, white supremacists, controls the government” etc.) AS WELL AS goyim making criticisms of jewish people and/or zionism. be wary of (goyishe) people who generalize or use being anti-zionist as a shield against accusations of antisemitism, and who calls anyone who calls them out on their antisemitism a zionist. take jewish people seriously on our accusations of antisemitism (suggesting jewish folks are overly paranoid is, you guessed it, antisemitic), BOOST OUR VOICES (a lot of posts we make about things regarding us & antisemitism usually just circulate among other jewish people). for the love of g-d, do not ask a jewish person on their stance on palestine and israel if its unsolicited and not something they tend to talk about. learn more about our culture! knowledge is fun and learning whats appropriation and whats appreciation is pretty important i think. be wary of nazi imagery!!! its not always as obvious as actual literal swastikas, neo-nazis are known for using imagery and, like, certain phrases to be more lowkey about their nazism. learn to recognize these.

this is super long already so im gonna (try to) wrap it up and also put another disclaimer here that i can be really fucking stupid so if i messed up please tell me and also realize that i could probably be more constructive or specific about this and that i probably left out a shitton of things people can do. you can always improve in your activism!! theres always stuff to learn or unlearn, theres always something to do, theres always gonna be times when you fuck up but letting people educate you so you can better = very good start!

like, going into the point of my original post (here, for reference), SAYING you want to shut down terfs/nazis/any other hateful group is all well and good, spreading that and making sure they have no platform and dont feel comfortable expressing their disgusting views is great! but saying is one thing, actually doing it is another. like idk hopefully i managed to shed some light on how to do that and how to support marginalized people (specifically trans people and jewish people in this case i guess) at least a little bit. like....people can say they hate terfs and nazis all they want but unless they ACTUALLY do something to demonstrate that then its worthless. performative activism is completely useless and selfish and allowing yourself to become lackluster and not even try to do anything about the problems you claim to oppose or even think about why it needs opposition (beyond “its bad to oppress people”) has no place within activist spaces imo

its a constant struggle probably, and theres always gonna be things you could theoretically Do More of, or ways to be More Helpful, but yknow. begin with the little things and try to grow and extend compassion where you can. ask questions too, if you want to learn how to help specific people. oppression is often systemic and hard to untangle and hard to fight, and like.....not to be sappy but theres a saying from the talmud that goes “you are not obligated to complete the work, but nor are you free to abandon it” and idk. i think thats good to think about. doing just a little bit is better than doing nothing.

anyway im done
